When dreadlocks are done properly from the beginning, using lots of products is pretty unnecessary. If you’re a minimalist, shampooing, blow-drying, and crochet hooking is all you need. But if you like products and want something to aid you through the locking process, then there are some options out there!
First of all, DO NOT USE WAX. Even though there are dreadlocks lines out there that sell waxes, beeswax is a big no-no. Wax is not water-soluble, so it won’t break down all the way when you wash your dreadlocks, and you will build up a residue over time that is extremely difficult to remove. The wax will be stuck inside the dread, give it a sticky/heavy texture, and dull the color of your hair. Wax may be a temporary fix for frizz, but just don’t do it.
Dollylocks is the dreadlock-specific line that we carry at Liz Kidder Studio. The Dollylocks Professional Organic Dreadlock Product Line launched in 2011 and is truly one of a kind! It is the only 100% natural and organic product line specifically designed for dreadlocks. The entire product line is water-soluble, residue-free, vegan, gluten-free, and certified cruelty-free! Their shampoos come in liquid or bar form, the tightening spray gives amazing texture, and the tightening gel is a great replacement for a wax. Those are our favorites. They also have refreshing sprays, conditioning oils, locking powder, detox treatments, and more! When you come in, we can discuss what might work well on your hair!
Other Products. We carry a few other brands of shampoos and specific products that we like for our dreadlocks. Different hair types tend to like different things, so sometimes it takes some experimenting on your end to figure out what works best for you!
Dreadlocks tools and decorations. In addition to hair products, we also carry crochet hooks, large elastics, dreadlock beads and charms, hair wraps, hats, clip-in dreadlocks, gift certificates, etc! Come on in and check it out!
